Peadar Noone

Peadar was born in 1909 and reared in Cloonacarrow. He got his education in Kingsland N.S. He also won many scholarships to the Gaeltacht, thus becoming a fluent Irish speaker. At the age of 16 he started his teaching career, teaching in a school in Rooskey where many of his students were as old as himself. His teaching then took him to Ballaghaderreen, where he taught in the Vocational School. During the summer holidays he taught his well-loved Irish in a college in Galway. He gave night classes in Irish in Kingsland school in the early 1940s. As well as being a brilliant teacher, Peadar was a talented musician and dancer. A lot of Matt Molloy's music was influenced by him. As they were near neighbours, they played a lot together. Peadar also played in a band. In his spare time, he taught Irish dancing. He married Nan Surlis in 1944, she was also a teacher. They had six children who have all been very successful. His daughter’s Ann and Sinéad are both teachers, while Noreen is a lecturer in the teach er training college in Limerick. Mairéad is a presenter of RTE 's programme 'Cúrsaí'. His son Peadar Óg is a doctor and Micheál is a priest. It is obvious that their children inherited their parents love of learning. Sadly, Peadar passed away on the 28th February 1983. His friend Matt Molloy played at his graveside. I am sure his family are very proud of him and so they should. May his memory live on in his children and in their children.
